Borough of Swarthmore
The Borough of Swarthmore was incorporated in 1893 from a portion of Springfield township. The area was first called Westdale, in honor of its native son, Benjamin West. When Swarthmore College was founded here in 1864, it became the focus of the area. In 1876, the train station at the College was named Swarthmore and the area was then generally known as Swarthmore from then on.
