Seven Stars Inn
First opened about 1754 by Michael Cypher as the Ancient Inn, the inn went through several name change as the innkeepers changed, until finally named the Seven Stars by John Baker about 1804. That name stuck.
Seven Stars Restaurant runs an advertisement on the Internet, repeated on their restaurant menu, that they are the Brownback Inn or Tavern. They are not. They are the 1754 establishment of Michael Cypher. Estelle Cremer, a local historian, covered both of these early establishments in her book, 30000 Acres: Vincent and Pikeland Townships, and makes it quite clear which one is which.
This case of mistaken identity also puts to rest a story of supposed ghostly activity at the Seven Stars, often attributed to the murder of Rachel Brownback, the second wife of Benjamin Brownback. As the murder occurred in her family’s inn, that would have been the actual Brownback property, not this one. If this particular tavern is haunted, it is not by the ghost of Rebecca.
